Exploring the What, Why and How of Public Engagement

10.30 am – 4.15 pm, Tuesday 6 July,

Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff Bay.

Public engagement is becoming an increasingly important part of research. This conference will serve as an introduction to this area with presentations from funders, academics and those involved in engagement projects. Come along and find out more about public engagement, what the benefits could be for you and your research and how you might get started. You will also view the highly acclaimed ‘Visualise’ theatre show*, and have the chance to enter the ‘Pictures of Public Engagement’ competition to win a cash prize.

Organised in collaboration with Vitae, this free conference has been designed primarily for researchers, but will also be of interest to research support staff from institutions across Wales and the South West of England. To book your place please visit: http://www.vitae.ac.uk/policy-practice/916-247661/Exploring-the-What-Why-and-How-of-Public-Engagement.html

Pictures of Public Engagement Competition

We would like you to choose a single image to illustrate how your research affects the wider world. Attached to the image should be a 150 word description and a summary statement of no more than 140 characters.

Be creative and interpret the call broadly. What are the outputs of your research and where are its effects felt? Could your image feature an individual, situation or event, perhaps a gadget? For inspiration why not look at entries to the ‘Images of Research’ competition which ran at the University of Bath recently? You can view the images here: http://www.bath.ac.uk/research/pgskills/courses/photocomp10gallery

The Beacon for Wales will print entries and display them in the conference exhibition. A prize of £250 will be awarded to the best entry. The winner will be chosen by a panel of judges selected by the Beacon for Wales.

Entry instructions and further guidelines will follow shortly. In the meantime please contact beacon@cardiff.ac.uk if you have any queries. The deadline for entries is 12 pm, Friday 11th June 2010.
