Working with Schools – Techniquest

Techniquest is a Cardiff based educational charity which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. Andrea Meyrick, who hosted the masterclass and is head of Projects at the organisation, and the rest of the Techniquest team aim to engage people with science offering a wide range of services and activities to schools and teachers. Angela addressed some of the key issues and questions surrounding public engagement and working with young people, such as ‘why bother?’. Well, the reasons are abundantly clear: it can develop their confidence, give them transferable skills and improve their CVs, enrich their curriculum and help to open up more opportunities beyond compulsory education, such as further education or practical training for prospective careers.

Have You Got News For Us? – BBC Cymru Wales

BBC Cymru Wales organised this masterclass to give those involved a better understanding of how the media works, what constitutes a ‘story’, and what techniques they can utilise to best maximise their chances of getting a story on air or in print. The emphasis seemed to lie with presenting stories that the media will favour, as competition is tough. You need to create stories that stand out and will interest readers, but what makes a good story?

Engaging with Disadvantaged Young People

For those not lucky enough to be raised with an appreciation and understanding of history, or even if you’re simply young and active with a short attention span, museums generally don’t seem like the most appealing of places. But beyond the imposing marble columns of its sweeping front entrance, the National Museum Wales, or Amgueddfa Cymru, is doing a lot to convince the people of Wales that appearances aren’t everything.
